About the Provider

Dr. Tortolani is currently the Director of the MedStar Union Memorial Spine Program. He is a board certified orthopedic surgeon, fellowship trained in spine surgery. As a spine specialist, his vast experience includes treating all disorders of the spine, including herniated discs, spinal stenosis, adult and adolescent scoliosis and spondylolisthesis (unstable vertebra that slips out of alignment). He is considered an expert in the field of cervical disc replacement surgery.

Dr. Tortolani's special interests include spine research and treating adults and children with spinal deformities (scoliosis and kyphosis). He was a leading investigator for an FDA sponsored clinical trial which compared the outcomes of spinal fusion to those of total disc replacement. The study revealed total disc replacement yielded better long term results and a faster recovery.

He is currently the principal investigator on a research study focusing on less invasive surgical methods to reduce pain and hasten recovery. Dr. Tortolani was named a Baltimore magazine Top Doctor in 2014, 2013, 2012, and 2011 and serves as an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He strives to maintain a patient-centered approach whereby patients and their families share in the decision-making for their care.
