Spinal fusion is a procedure that is used treat back pain by fusing two or more vertebrae together so there is no longer any motion between them. This procedure helps to increase the stability of the spine. Spinal fusion surgery can be performed on the cervical, thoracic and lumbar vertebrae of the back and can be done from the front (anterior), the back (posterior) or from the side (lateral).
This type of surgery is used to treat a variety of debilitating spinal diseases and disorders such as degenerative disc disease, stenosis, deformities of the spine, fractures, herniated discs and more.
Our experts in spinal fusion surgery will use a bone graft, taken either from your own bone harvested from another location on your body or artificial bone material, to facilitate the fusion. During the surgery, metal plates and screws are put in place to hold the fusion completely still and in place while it heals.
It is important to understand that recovery after spinal fusion takes time. The bone and the bone graft need to fully join together into one solid piece. It can take a few months or more until the fusion is healed completely. Rehabilitation is a very critical step in the spinal fusion recovery process. Our rehabilitation therapists will teach you how to move around in your daily life safely while the spinal fusion is healing.
